Komen Announces Plans for First Siouxland
Race for the Cure - Volunteers Needed
The Siouxland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure
announced in March 2006, plans to apply to host a Komen Race for the Cure®. The
event is the largest series of 5K runs and fitness walks in the world with
well over 1 million participants since 2000. The Komen Race for the Cure
Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast
cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have
lost their battle with the disease.
“We are quite excited to apply to host a Race.” said Marilyn Rensink, Komen
Siouxland Affiliate President. “We’ve received numerous phone calls since
our Affiliate was started three years ago asking when our Race would be
held. We finally feel we are ready to host an event which will likely not
only become our signature event but a huge event for the Siouxland
community.”
“I
strongly encourage anyone who has a passion about fighting breast cancer to
get involved,” said Lesa McDermott, Race application chair, “this is going
to be a huge undertaking not only for the Affiliate but also for the
Siouxland Community. But one that will also be very rewarding on Race day
when we see hundreds of people there for one reason….to find a cure for
breast cancer.”
Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to
honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer
at the age of 36. Today, the organization is an international network of
more than 100,000 survivors and activists working around the globe.
Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest
grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save
lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to
find a cure for breast cancer. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the
Cure, the organization has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill its promise
to become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight
against breast cancer in the world. Locally, up to 75% of the net proceeds
generated by the Komen Siouxland Affiliate stay in its service area where it
is used to fund community outreach and educational programs on breast cancer
and breast health. The remaining income goes to the Susan G. Komen for the
Cure Award and Research Grant Program supporting research, awards and
educational and scientific programs around the world.
A
Race application committee is being formed. The first committee meeting was
held April 3 at 5:30pm at the Komen Siouxland Affiliate office located at
700 4th Street, Suite 200 in Sioux City.
